Vixen, Interrupted: Update on Which Brands for Women of Color Should Paula Begoun Review?

Approximately one minute ago, I sent an email to Paula Begoun's office, detailing which brands for women of color I would like to see her team review.  I emailed five brands - Steelo Cosmetics, Thevi Cosmetics, Black Radiance, Black Opal*, Iman Cosmetics*, and  Monave Minerals. Now that I think about it, I forgot Milani Cosmetics but I'll include it in the next email.

Just in case some of you were wondering why I've even considered sending over a list of women-of-color friendly brands to Paula Begoun, I figured I'd address it now. I respect that Paula Begoun has stepped up as a "Cosmetics Cop." I respect her experience and her research. I don't always agree with what she says, believe it or not. I do appreciate that she provides sources in addition to her reviews.

Vixen, Interrupted: Which Brands for Women of Color Should Paula Begoun Review?

Excited as I was to finally review Paula Begoun's "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me," 7th Edition, today I am even more excited because of two things. First, not only am I receiving the 8th Edition (which came out January 2010) but Ms. Begoun's office asked me if there were any specific lines that I think they should review.

My picks would be Steelo Cosmetics, Black Radiance, Black Opal, Iman Cosmetics, Flori Roberts, Fashion Fair, Interface, and the CoverGirl Queen Collection.

I'm extremely curious to know what WOC friendly brands you all would love to see in the book. Just leave a comment and I'll be sure to pass along the information!

Give it Away Gift Guide: Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me by Paula Begoun

Although I've mentioned Paula Begoun several times here on Blaq Vixen Beauty (exhibit A, exhibit B, and exhibit C),  I thought I should end 2009 by mentioning her gem of a manual - "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me."

At the moment, I have the 7th edition of this book. I found out today that Ms. Begoun is launching the 8th edition in January 2010. I hope that Ms. Begoun includes more brands formulated with women of color in mind and more drugstore brands as well.

When I first became the Style and Beauty steward for the website Helium, my knowledge on the cosmetic industry in general was limited.

However, I had a passion to learn  so I did this by researching and buying products to test. I would  then write articles and report my findings. I also drew on my personal experiences with makeup to write articles.

When I started Blaq Vixen Beauty (then Blaq Vixen), I crafted features and articles based on the knowledge that I gleaned from the pages of this wonderful guide.

Out of all the cosmetics books that I have, "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me" is my favorite. It's wonderfully comprehensive - I've spent countless hours reading (and rereading) Ms. Begoun's mini reviews on the hottest products on the market today.

It's perfect for the product junkie that wants to stop wasting her money on overhyped products. It's a must-have for the makeup beginner who wants to expand her knowledge on different brands and products.  I'm not saying that you have to agree with everything Ms. Begoun says but just read with an open mind. I've read quite a few of her reviews about certain products that I've tried and I agree with her. For example, here is what she had to say about M.A.C.'s Mineralize Skinfinish:

:) $$$ Mineralize Skinfinish ($24.50) is a sheer, talc-based pressed powder that looks wonderfully natural on skin. It's almost impossible to make this powder look heavy, thick, or dry. Those with normal to dry skin will appreciate the slight sheen this leaves behind (and remember, talc is a mineral, too, so M.A.C.'s name for this product is accurate.) All five shades are neutral and highly recommended, but there are no options for very dark skin tones.

I picked up Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Dark back in May. To date, it is the only M.A.C. product that I bought that I actually love. Even though the product that I bought is slightly different from the original Skinfinish, Ms. Begoun's glowing review applies to the Skinfinish Natural as well. Whenever I apply it, it gives me a subtle, shimmery but matte glow that I've grown to adore. At first, I didn't notice it when the MUA applied it over the Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation but I did when I applied this powder over bare, primed skin.

Ms. Begoun's invaluable expertise and experience is evident in each review. She provides her readers "with substantiated and documented studies and analysis about skin care and makeup products from other lines based on her extensive research and years of experience." I have to agree with this statement. I particularly love how she includes data from medical journals to either make or break a claim. The way she reviews beauty products is the way I want to review products one day (maybe in 2010!). She includes the highlights and shortcomings of each product so you know that you're getting an unbiased, but balanced review.

Anyway, "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me" is a fabulous primer - either for you or your favorite beauty addict. Of course, you can't lug this bulky, 1,000+ page book to you to the cosmetic's counter. However, I recommend that you write a list of products that you want to try that have earned positive reviews. Then, I would see what my favorite bloggers have to say about that product. I used to do this a lot when I first started getting into the whole beauty blogging scene.

I'm happy to say that I have some beauty knowledge under my belt but "Don't Go to the Makeup Counter Without Me" still remains as a crucial beauty resource!

The Beauty Closet: Mint Glaze FX Fortifying Lip Treat - Mint Primer w/ SPF 15 Review

Editor's Note: The product mentioned in this Beauty Closet review have been provided by Cover FX.

If you're a fan of the Blaq Vixen Beauty page on Facebook, then you know that I was psyched about Paula Begoun's Beauty Blogger Event on BlogTalkRadio. I was invited to Ms. Begoun's premiere episode of Be Beautifully Informed. And now, I figured I'd passed on what I learned from last night's show:

Don't leave your lips naked at night!

Paula mentioned that someone asked for a natural cure for chapped lips in a magazine. She swears that if you follow what her advice, you won't ever have to worry about chapped lips again. She recommends that you keep a pot of lip balm or a nice, rich gloss by the side of your bed on your nightstand. You apply it before you go to bed and it helps to protect the skin on your lips, which is incredibly sensitive. Take your time and massage the product into your lips.

Normally, I'm pretty good at apply something on my lips at night - whether it be Softlips PURE Natural Lip Balm (I have it in fragrance - free, citrus and bergamot) or Palmer's Cocoa Butter Lip Butter (Dark Chocolate & Peppermint as well as Dark Chocolate & Cherry are the tasty flavors I own). Now, ever since purchasing Peace, Love and Sunshine Unrefined Shea Butter, I smear a dabble of it on my lips. I'm sort of addicted to it now!

However, I have a new product that I am considering adding to my lip regimen: MintGlaze FX Fortifying Lip Treat - Mint Primer w/ SPF 15. Since Cover FX recommends that you use this lip primer as a treatment, I thought it would be the perfect product to help repair my lips. Just today, I brushed on a liberal amount of MintGlaze FX and then I applied my newest lip gloss from BeautyTicketStila Lip Glaze in Berry (which is $7.99 instead of $20!). Cover FX recommends that you apply MintGlaze FX three times daily and at night to reap the maximum benefits. I definitely notice how smooth my lips looked before I applied my lip gloss. The Lip Glaze was just an added bonus!

Described as "a protective, volumizing and fortifying glazed balm to maintain youthful lips" as well as "a pout perfecting primer that hydrates and softens the appearance of lines," this balm has "lip freshening" peppermint. Unfortunately, if you lick your lips, there isn't enough peppermint in MintGlaze FX to actually freshen your breath. More peppermint oil, please!

While I like this product, I wish that the SPF was higher - I like my products to have a SPF of 30+ - and I wish that it did a better job at making my lipsticks and lipglosses last longer. If the SPF was higher, I'd wouldn't mind using this during the day. My upper lip is naturally dark so I've been more conscientious of the lipwear that I use.
