Nia’s a stickler for following a precise regimen. She begins the day by washing her face with TaUt [Liquid] Facial Cleanser by Leonard Engelman, followed by a 15-minute facial ice pack to invigorate her skin, ending with Aveda Hydrating Lotion. Once a week Nia also treats her face to Aveda’s Intensive Hydrating Masque.
-ESSENCE Magazine, 1997
Possibly the most popular search term ever in regards to black beauty, I constantly see searches for Nia Long’s skin care secrets. A little research led me to an exclusive BET.com feature in which the brown beauty shared her entire skin care regimen. I also found out information about her aesthetician, new skin care products she’s loves and what you can do right now to jumpstart your skin regimen!
Nia Long’s Skin Care Secrets: Mamie McDonald [1999 (?) -]
Mamie McDonald was not mentioned in the BET.com article…and I’m not surprised as she is Nia’s best-kept secret! If you can afford to, plan to make an appointment with Nia Long’s aesthetician Mamie McDonald, the owner of Skin By Mamie. Touted as a celeb skin care guru, Ms. McDonald often shares which celebrities stop by her day spa to prepare for their red carpet appearances. Some of her famous clients include Iman, Angela Bassett, Beyonce, Audra McDonald, Kerry Washington, Eva Mendes, and of course, Nia.
Nia Long Interviewed by BET.com : Heritage Store Aura Glow in Almond, Matty Purely C Serum, & Eucalyptus Oil
Treat yourself to a bottle of Heritage Store Aura Glow in Almond. You can snag it for less than $10! It is also available in Vanilla Spice. Get it at Walgreens.
The key to having great skin is to keep it super-duper moisturized. I go to bed greasy. I use a product from a line at Whole Foods, but it’s not expensive. It’s called Aura Glow from Heritage products. They have almond scented oil. I use it every day, and my son uses it as well. It’s a staple in our house. I put it on in the shower while my skin is still wet.
Long likes to use a vitamin C-based moisturizer when the weather is warm. Her facialist, Matty Solomon of Matty’s European Skin Care Salon and Cosmetics, has a $75 vitamin C treatment that she uses. Matty “Purely C” repairs visible signs of aging and sun damage. It is their number one bestseller.
However, there are plenty of vitamin C serums on the market that are less than $75. For example, I personally use Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Vitamin C Collagen Booster ($48 for 1 oz and $$72 for 1.7 oz) from Sephora. I’m on my second bottle and plan to repurchase. It is an antioxidant-rich brightening and nourishing serum enriched with vitamin C. It smells heavenly- just like citrus – and features a five-source vitamin C complex that supports natural collagen production, brightens skin and minimizes fine lines. It also has green tea extract. I like to apply this serum in the morning before I apply my sunscreen.
Vitamin C is popping up in face oils too, like the Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Oil – Face (which also has retinol) and Ole Henriksen Pure Truth Vitamin C Youth Activating Oil (on my shopping list).
As for the eucalyptus oil, Long credits steaming as the reason her brown skin has a youthful glow. This is “The Secret” for glowing brown skin like hers!
It really does keep you moisturized. At home, inside my steam shower, I add eucalyptus oil and it opens everything up.

Nia Long’s Beauty Secret: Scott Barnes Body Bling Original Bronzer Lotion [2009 & 2014]
I learned years ago that celebrity makeup artist Scott Barnes concocted Jennifer Lopez’s coveted glow. Nia’s favorite product from him is his infamous Scott Barnes Body Bling Moisturizing Shimmer Body Lotion in Original. Yay for a brown girl serving luminous body! Body Bling is the perfect product to take your glow to new heights. This product is also available in Original and Platinum at Dermstore.
Long told BET.com about her experience of working with Barnes in 2009. Her cover came out November 2009:
Makeup artist Scott Barnes did my makeup for the last Essence cover that I did. I fell in love with his line and he sent me a bunch of stuff. I called him and said, ‘Oh my god, I’m like a 12-year old girl playing in her mother’s makeup.’ He really understands African-American skin.
Makeup artist Lauren Napier provided some insight to get the best results with Body Bling:
Body Bling wears best when skin is pre-moistened, apply with hands, set with a brush and loose translucent powder.
And at this past 2014 NAACP Awards, celebrity makeup artist Saisha Beecham gave Long such a splendid slaying that left us all mesmerized. Around a week later, Beecham confessed about the winning dynamic duo she used for Long’s cheek and body glow: NYX Cosmetics Ultra Pearl Mania in Mink Pearl and Scott Barnes Body Bling Moisturizing Shimmer Body Lotion in Original, respectively. Get into her sexy summer sheen below shared on social media platform Instagram by Saisha:
Nia Long Interviewed by Hello Beautiful
Here is a snippet of a 2014 Hello Beautiful interview Nia did in which she mentioned Mamie:
I’m a big spa girl. I really love facials. The high-end products, I’ve tried them all. I’ve been going to Mamie’s skincare since the days of “Third Watch” when I was doing the show and she’s amazing. She does all of the celebrities and she’s a black woman so she really understands our skin. She does all of my facials, my microdermabrasions, oxygen therapy…she’s really great! I feel like when you start with clean, fresh skin you’re good.
Nia Long Interviewed by Juicy Magazine : Dr. Lancer, Yon-ka, and Neutrogena
The celebrity life, hair, and beauty rag Juicy Magazine interviewed The Divide star for their “Shake Your Beauty” feature (September/October 2014) in which she dropped some new beauty and skin care gems:
- Dr. Lancer The Method: Polish Exfoliator (“I love Dr. Lancer’s products if you want something more clinical and medicinal because it has glycolic [acid] and lightening agents.”)
- Yon-ka Phyto-Contour (“You should switch off with more natural products too.”)
- Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes (“They are the best. I go to Costco and buy the big box and split it with one of my girlfriends, because it’s like, Where do you put all of these? Here’s a little tip, if the towelettes dry out, put a little water there to make it come back to life.”)
I’ll keep you updated with more skin care and beauty revelations from the urban legend!
