Pretty Young Things: Anika Noni Rose at Princess Tiana's Official Induction Into the Disney Princess Royal Court

Here is Anika Noni Rose at yesterday's Disney event in New York City. It was Princess Tiana's official induction into the Disney Princess Royal Court. While I've been focusing on making my wardrobe edgy, Rose's soft pink chiffon dress makes me want to embrace my romantic side, starting with a certain Merona dress I spotted in Essence's April 2010 issue.

As for her makeup, I'll definitely ask celebrity makeup artist Samuel Paul what he used. I'm particularly smitten with her sunset eyes and her shimmering skin as well! I guess I'll be buying Molton Brown Heavenly Gingerlily Shimmer Oil after all to get a similar effect.

Initially, I wasn't too thrilled to learn that Princess Tiana would spend most of her time on screen as a frog, of all things. I'm sure you've already heard a similar comment so I won't rehash my thoughts. A frog, really?!

I will say that when my best friend announced that the theme for her baby's birthday was Princess and the Frog, I went ahead and settled on the Disney Princess Tiana and the Frog Serving Set Tea Party Playset as well as the Princess and the Frog Musical Instrument Set. Then I saw the Barbie and the dress with slippers. My heart melted a little bit and I actually got excited. But then I remembered I was there for my goddaughter and not myself.

Unfortunately, Target was sold out of the Princess Tiana Barbie when I last visited. Isn't she adorable?

Promotions: Get a Free, Fierce and Fab Makeover with Christian Siriano

Damn...why does it seem like the best events always happen in The Big Apple? I mean, can someone stop by San Antonio once a while? If so, that would be the official reawakening of my social life!

Anyway, if I had the pleasure of flying to NYC this weekend, I'd make my way to the Victoria's Secret at Herald Square this Saturday, August 15th to help celebrate the launch of Christian Siriano's limited edition makeup collection.  And while I'm there, I'll also help celebrate the revamping of Victoria's Secret Very Sexy collection. This would be right after I get my free, personalized makeover of course!

If you live in New York or you're planning to be there before Saturday, make your way to 1328 Broadway at 34th Street. But don't forget to call (866) 842-8674 to book your appointment! How nice it would be to try the Boho Chicster look I saw in the September issue of Essence. Mikki Taylor featured Christian Siriano's Silky Eyeshadow in Gilded Fierce for this particular look. Since it is a shimmery shadow in an unexpected hue it's perfect for the evening.

The Vanity: Who's Afraid of the Long, Lush Lash?

Fatima Siad for Arise Magazine

I am.

Baze Mpinja, beauty editor at Vibe Vixen, Suede and now Glamour, used to be until she took the Fake Lash Challenge last year. After writing that she was taking a break from false lashes, a reader wrote in to say that she was "shocked" that a beauty editor would shy away from falsies.

I can understand where Baze is coming from though. I know falsies have been around way before the glamorous days of  Dorothy Dandridge and Marilyn Monroe but still.  Furthermore, Essence has said that lashes with unexpected shapes are in this season, especially if you want to be a Makeup Diva.

When I read that, I was like, "I still haven't mastered Lashes 101 and now you're telling me I should be hitting up Shu Uemura to upgrade my lash game? Are you kidding me?!" Yeah, I was losing it until I chatted with Tia this afternoon.

She was telling me that she had fallen in love with NYX lashes. I told her that I wanted to try them as well but every time I muster the courage to apply lashes, it always looks a hot mess.

She asked me how I apply them. First, I apply glue on the band. I wait a few seconds, and then I try to fit them to the curve of my lash line with tweezers. That's where I mess up. Even with the Revlon Fantasy Lengths Maximum Wear Self Adhesive Eyelashes, I still had trouble. However, my sister were able to apply them perfectly. This aggravated me to no end. Why? Because her specialty is hair, not beauty, yet ol' girl were able to get a flirty look within seconds. Hmph.

However, Tia recommended the Sephora Brand Lash Placement Kit. This soft-tipped applicator promises to "provide the perfect placement of lashes and then, removes them with ease." It has a soft, anti-bacterial storage stand that retains the natural lash curve. You'll save time and you won't have to worry about making a mess.

Do you know that when I purchase this, it'lll be my first purchase from Sephora? Ever? Please, no photos! I know that might be unheard of but I'm used to being the exception. Maybe I'll inspired me to build my beauty bank...who knows?

Back to Baze. Inspired by Baze's previous "too thick, too long and too distracting" fiasco with falsies, Glamour challenged her to embrace the trend once more. She wrote that she was relieved that the false lashes in Glamour's beauty closet looked real and she settled on Sugar Cosmetics Flirt False Lashes in Angel, $9. Click here to read the rest!

More Than a Vixen: Aaliyah Dana Haughton (1979 - 2001)

Aaliyah

There will probably never be another Queen of Urban Pop, just as there will never be another King of Pop. It's definitely hard to believe that today, eight years ago, I was reading about her death in the overseas military publication, Stars and Stripes. I remember thinking that it was joke - that someone at the Stars and Stripes was just hating on Aaliyah until I saw it on the news, on MTV, on BET...it was unreal. I depend on music to keep me going so you can believe that Aaliyah's music helped to inspire me...and keep on inspiring me.

One in a million forever.
