The Beauty Closet: Smashbox Untamed High Lights Cheek Luminizer in Aglow Review

Smashbox Untamed Collection for Summer 2009

Before this moment can get any more awkward than it already has, I'm well aware that I was supposed to review this many moons ago - like back in March or April (at the very latest) of 2010. So yeah - I can be a little absent-minded at times. It just so happened that I was cleaning/updating my makeup bag when I suddenly remembered.

The Smashbox Untamed High Lights Cheek Luminizer in Aglow ($24 but $14.99 on BeautyTicket) was a part of Smashbox's Untamed Summer 2009 collection. Jill from BeautyTicket sent it over editorial consideration since I wanted to incorporate some "glow" into my makeup routine.

Smashbox Untamed High Lights Cheek Luminizer in GlowHad I researched this product beforehand, I would've requested another product instead. As a creamy luminizer, you can use it to highlight the high part underneath your eyebrows, on your cheekbones, inner corners of the eyes and on the tip (not bridge) of your nose.

With the skin issues that I have (large pores, uneven skintone, acne scarring, texture), I had no business with this product because it illuminates all my flaws! First of all, I have combination skin so I should've opted for a powder, not cream, luminizer. When I apply it, it comes off more like "shimmery but oily" than "effortless glow," especially in pictures. It lasts around 2 to 3 hours on me.

In the compact, it's a iridescent lilac with icy pink and silver undertones. Since I have warm undertones,  a gold luminizer would look best on me. This particular luminizer would work for people with cool undertones though, granted if you have dry skin.

I'm not too sure if I could still use this but I'm thinking maybe I could use it as a cream eyeshadow or maybe even as an eyeshadow base. Other than that, I can't use this at all.

Smashbox Untamed High Lights Cheek Luminizer in AglowHave you ever tried a cream luminizer before? Which ones are your favorite?

Hauled: POP Beauty, Smashbox and Yves Saint Laurent from BeautyTicket

Out of the above picture, I bought the Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss (Full Color) in Flash, the Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss (Sheer Color) in Red Rock, the Pop Beauty Cheeky Cake in Beach Babe and Pop Beauty Blush Cake in Natural in Nudes. This is my first time I've bought anything from these brands. So proud of myself for expanding my makeup collection!

The Yves Saint Laurent "Tuxedo Collection" Radiant Highlighter Palette and Smashbox Untamed High Lights Cheek Luminizer in Aglow was sent for editorial consideration from BeautyTicket, shortly after the People's Choice Awards.

Which one should I do a review on or feature in an article soon?

We're Off That: Spotlighting Pink Beauty Products for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Inspired by Tempt'd and A Girl's Gotta Spa, Blaq Vixen Beauty vowed not to showcase pink or pink-ribboned beauty products sold specifically for breast cancer awareness and research.

Earlier, we posted about Hard Rock's PINKTOBER initiative. That post has been deleted. We were also going to write about Palmer's partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure campaign but have decided to pull the plug, as that promotion was still in draft.

We know that October is almost over but we figured that we would resume posting in November. Think about it - breast cancer doesn't just strike in October, right? And besides, breast cancer awareness should be a year-long initiative for all of us!

You may have noticed that we haven't deleted the post about BeautyTicket's Pink Boutique.

However, it has been edited to include that if you do decide to donate 10% of your purchase to BreastCancer.org, please make sure to ask for a confirmation letter or email to make sure that this organization has really received your donation and for tax purposes.

The money that you spend on products from BeautyTicket's Pink Boutique (or any other pink product for that matter) could easily be donated to any of the following foundations and organizations to include Think Before You Pink, The American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This October (and for the rest of this year), Blaq Vixen Beauty challenges you to do more than just shop. Of course, if you need a BeautyBlender or a new lip set, then feel free to buy these items.

Furthermore, Blaq Vixen Beauty will not be hosting a fundraiser. If it in your heart to donate to the cause, you don't necessarily have to donate through a blog fundraiser or charity. We will also refrain from utilizing affiliate marketing as we feel that it would be in bad taste to receive any sort of monetary compensation from the sale of items associated with breast cancer awareness.

What have you done to contribute to the cure lately?

The Beauty Closet: Mint Glaze FX Fortifying Lip Treat - Mint Primer w/ SPF 15 Review

Editor's Note: The product mentioned in this Beauty Closet review have been provided by Cover FX.

If you're a fan of the Blaq Vixen Beauty page on Facebook, then you know that I was psyched about Paula Begoun's Beauty Blogger Event on BlogTalkRadio. I was invited to Ms. Begoun's premiere episode of Be Beautifully Informed. And now, I figured I'd passed on what I learned from last night's show:

Don't leave your lips naked at night!

Paula mentioned that someone asked for a natural cure for chapped lips in a magazine. She swears that if you follow what her advice, you won't ever have to worry about chapped lips again. She recommends that you keep a pot of lip balm or a nice, rich gloss by the side of your bed on your nightstand. You apply it before you go to bed and it helps to protect the skin on your lips, which is incredibly sensitive. Take your time and massage the product into your lips.

Normally, I'm pretty good at apply something on my lips at night - whether it be Softlips PURE Natural Lip Balm (I have it in fragrance - free, citrus and bergamot) or Palmer's Cocoa Butter Lip Butter (Dark Chocolate & Peppermint as well as Dark Chocolate & Cherry are the tasty flavors I own). Now, ever since purchasing Peace, Love and Sunshine Unrefined Shea Butter, I smear a dabble of it on my lips. I'm sort of addicted to it now!

However, I have a new product that I am considering adding to my lip regimen: MintGlaze FX Fortifying Lip Treat - Mint Primer w/ SPF 15. Since Cover FX recommends that you use this lip primer as a treatment, I thought it would be the perfect product to help repair my lips. Just today, I brushed on a liberal amount of MintGlaze FX and then I applied my newest lip gloss from BeautyTicketStila Lip Glaze in Berry (which is $7.99 instead of $20!). Cover FX recommends that you apply MintGlaze FX three times daily and at night to reap the maximum benefits. I definitely notice how smooth my lips looked before I applied my lip gloss. The Lip Glaze was just an added bonus!

Described as "a protective, volumizing and fortifying glazed balm to maintain youthful lips" as well as "a pout perfecting primer that hydrates and softens the appearance of lines," this balm has "lip freshening" peppermint. Unfortunately, if you lick your lips, there isn't enough peppermint in MintGlaze FX to actually freshen your breath. More peppermint oil, please!

While I like this product, I wish that the SPF was higher - I like my products to have a SPF of 30+ - and I wish that it did a better job at making my lipsticks and lipglosses last longer. If the SPF was higher, I'd wouldn't mind using this during the day. My upper lip is naturally dark so I've been more conscientious of the lipwear that I use.

Pink Vixen Beauty: BeautyTicket's Pink Boutique + Stila Sale

For only 48 hours, take advantage of BeautyTicket's inventory of Stila products. Use checkout code "STILA20" to get an extra 20% off.  I suggest comparing BeautyTicket's prices with Beauty Crunch and Brigette's Boutique. This way, you'll get the best price possible for that particular Stila product that you want. For example, instead of paying $19.99 for the Stila Surprise & Shine Talking Palette (normally $40) on BeautyTicket, you can pay $15.95 on the Brigette's Boutique site.

Also, "shop for a cure." When you use code "AWARENESS" at checkout, 10% of your purchase will be donated to BreastCancer.org. If you decide to go this route, make sure to ask for a confirmation letter or email assuring you that your donation has gone to this organization. You can also enjoy free shipping with this code. In addition, BeautyTicket has been featured in publication such as People Style Watch, Teen Vogue, Self Magazine and NBC News.

Check out the gallery for Stila products that you can buy from the Pink Boutique!

Vixen, Interrupted: Kush Magazine, Back to College, Brush Talk & BeautyTicket

Enough with the advertisements and promotions...let's get down to the good stuff!

Today, I received an email from Kush Magazine, which is a publication for women of color in the United Kingdom. I'm the new resident writer for their Beauty Buzz section! It seems so surreal to say that but it's true. This is the first offer that I've received that's actually gone through. I was supposed to write for the beauty section for a local newspaper but that is still in progress.

Next, on August 24th, I'll be attending St. Philip's College in San Antonio. I recently changed my major from pre-nursing to journalism. This will be the first I've stepped into a classroom since high school. For my first and second semesters, I took classes online at Kansas City Kansas Community College. Now, for my third semester, I have four subjects that are in a classroom setting and one online. One of the Airmen from my unit is in my class. I'm excited but at the same time I am nervous as hell. I have Speech this semester and when I'm nervous, talking isn't one of my strengths. We'll see how that goes.

Recently, Tia Lanell and I have teamed up for Brush Talk here on Blaq Vixen Beauty. I don't talk too much about my brush collection but since I'm planning to buy some more soon, I'd figured now would be a good time. The latest brushes I bought were back in April, when I was in Mississippi for TDY. I bought the Face Powder Brush with Folding Mini Brush from Elizabeth Arden as well as their 5-Piece Brush Essentials Set. I didn't bring my ecoTOOLS brush set because I didn't think that I was going to buy any makeup. Since I'm not a morning person, I didn't think that I would be waking up early to apply makeup. I should've known better because I ended up buying makeup! I bought a two lip glosses, six brushes and a foundation. That's not too bad, right? :) Anyway, the first installment is in draft. Stay tuned for that! We'll be talking about brushes that we own, have tried and our favorites. We will also spill what we use to clean our brushes. Just today, Tia told me that she was on a beauty forum when she read that one member uses extra virgin olive oil (yes, the type that you get from the grocery store) to clean her brushes! I knew extra virgin olive oil was good for the hair but didn't know that it was great for cleaning brushes. I hope to have it up either today or next week. But I'm shooting for today though.

Yesterday, I was contacted by BeautyTicket to do a giveaway here on Blaq Vixen Beauty. Now, before, I was swearing off of giveaways for a while, since my last handful of giveaways proved to be a hassle. However, I've changed my mind! For my latest giveaway, I'm giving away a 8-Piece Living Water Spa Set from Borghese. Worth $189, you can snag this luxurious at-home spa set for $49.99 for a savings of $139.01! You can save even more by using my special coupon code for all my lovely blaq vixens! This giveaway starts on Monday so don't forget to stop by and enter your name for a chance to win! For those of you who won my Suave giveaway, trust, I haven't forgotten about you!

Lastly, I volunteered to do a guest beauty review on A Girl's Gotta Spa! I'll be reviewing Freeman's Bare Foot Peppermint and Plum Creamy Pumice Foot Scrub. This isn't the only scent available, as I recently learned. If Peppermint & Plum doesn't sound appealing, you can choose from Iced Teaberry and Mint or Lemon and Sage.  Although it's not as popular as Olay Thermal Pedicure, it is formulated for us who stay up on our foot game. If you have minimal dry skin on your heels and between your toes, you'll benefit from this. If you need something heavy duty, please get the Thermal Pedicure! However, Freeman also has a self-warming version of this product if you're interested. You know, I am instantly reminded of what happened when I went shopping with my best friend. We were at Wal-Mart in the bath aisle. I told her how much I loved Olay Thermal Pedicure and how much I loved the warming sensation. When she saw that it cost about $8, she instantly grabbed the Freeman version. She told me, "$8?! I don't have money like that!" How ironic, when she can easily drop $100+ on sexy lingerie at Victoria's Secret! Let me stop!

Promotions: Prai Beauty is a BeautyTicket Steal of the Week

Editor's Note: The fragrance mentioned in this article was sent by BeautyTicket in honor of their Steal of the Week/Breast Cancer Awareness promotion.

I've come to realize that a purse fragrance is essential...and so has BeautyTicket!

This week, in honor of breast cancer awareness, BeautyTicket will be selling Prai Beauty's "Scent of a Woman" Eau de Parfum Purse Spray. While this is too mature for me (I am reminded of White Diamonds whenever I spray it), this might be right up your alley. And for $7.99 (regular price is $25), for all of you frugal vixens out there that live for deals like this, this is definitely a steal! This spectacular promotion will be live for one week only!

The fragrance pyramid for Scent of a Woman is as follows:

Top Notes: Citrus Bergamot, Orange Blossoms

Middle Notes: Sambac petals, Patchouli

Bottom Notes: Vetiver, various Musks

For each one sold, Prai Beauty will be making a 10% donation to the Breast Cancer Organization. Even if you don't buy this fragrance but choose to splurge on something else, remember to use the code "AWARENESS" at checkout to have 10% of your purchase donated to the Breast Cancer Organization. If you spend $50 or more, you get free shipping.

In addition, you can also get a free 6-Piece Travel Manicure Set which includes a nail strengthener pen, nail polish remover pen, cuticle softener pin, cuticle stick and two nail files. All of these items come in a nice-sized, clear travel case. Just think: maybe you decided to save yourself a bit of money by doing your own manicures lately. All you have to buy is a Sally Hansen Color Quick Fast Dry Nail Color Pen or an OPI Nic's Sticks Paint & Go Lacquer and you'll be set! Honestly, I can never sit still too long to let my own nails dry when I do them myself. Sometimes I even forget to apply a base coat/top coat. Yes, I know, shame on me. So I rather get my nails professionally done.

Your thoughts? Have you heard of Prai Beauty before?

Sampling Girly: She Speaks of Bliss...Do You?

I'm sure you have a lot to say and would love for your voice to be heard, right? I think She Speaks may be the network for you. As a member of the She Speaks community, you'll have the chance to test products and influence them.

For example, I received an invite to enroll in the Bliss Best of Skintentions program. This moisturizer is a multi-tasker - "Not only does it shields against burn-causing UVB rays, it's also one of the only moisturizers on the market in the U.S. that's clinically proven to protect against skin-aging UVA rays. And it's not just serious sun defense - this moisturizer also delivers a daily dose of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that help skin healthy and leaves a luminous finish."

I haven't had to combat embarrassing dry patches in a while. I'm determined to keep it that way. So yeah, I was more than a little interested in this product...the whole brand actually. On her blog, Tia Williams shared that she does the "lite" thing by using Bliss Lemon + Sage Body Butter Lite ($29), which is a Summer time version of the original, bestselling product. I would have benefited from this yesterday since the weather here in San Antonio is still unbearable. Maybe then I wouldn't have left greasy stains on the back seat?

Anyway, since I forgot to update my address in my account, I never received my free full-size tube, or the five offer cards for $5 off the product. However, I do have an online promotion code for all of my beautiful readers: to take advantage of this special offer, enter promotions code SSPEAKS before proceeding to checkout to receive $5 off Bliss Best of Skintentions moisturizer and free standard shipping at Bliss World. You have to select "standard shipping" to ensure that no shipping charges will be applied to your order. This offer expires September 30.

I also want to alert you that BeautyTicket has quite a few Bliss products at amazing prices. Use special promo code BLAQVIXEN to get an extra 10% off your order. It's valid until September 15th.

Are you a member of She Speaks? Have you tried Bliss products before?
