Lupita Lip Balm at the Oscars

I love when black actresses share their favorite beauty products…and this year, besides learning about her love for face oils, Lupita Nyong’o revealed her go-to lip balm. Shortly after delivering an eloquent, heart-wrenching speech for her Best Supporting Actress win, Nyong’o found herself badgered by none other than Ellen Degeneres. The Oscar host strolled the aisles with Pharrell’s famous Vivienne Westwood Mountain hat, hounding various A-listers for pizza money and tips.

Your stock just went up, you’ve got some money now Lupita!

Lupita Gives Ellen Her Balm

Unfortunately, the Nairobi Blue-clad belle of the ball didn’t have any coins in her Prada clutch, but her La Vie En Rose-tipped hand found an item worth dropping into the bulbous topper: Clarins HydraQuench Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm, which trended as #LupitasLipBalm on Twitter. At first, Benefit Cosmetics claimed it was their California Kissin’ Smile Brightening Lip Shine, tweeting that Lupita’s lip gloss was “on point.” However, shortly before, Clarins had already identified it as their HydraQuench Moisture.

Ellen Pocketed Lupita's BalmSurprised at the newly-minted Oscar winner’s donation, Ellen immediately pocketed the white-capped blue tube. “Lupita’s lip balm! That’s worth something,” Ellen mused. Nyong’o recently shared with E! that she couldn’t live without lip balm: “When your lips are dry you can’t think of anything else.” And can you believe Ellen applied Nyong’o’s lip balm?! At the Oscars?!

P.S. If you cannot fathom shelling out $24 for a tube of lip balm (no matter who uses it in black Hollywood), celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose previously used Kiehl’s Since 1851 Facial Fuel Lip Balm for Men ($9) on Lupita for an Oscars party. It provided a nice, moisturizing base for the YSL red lip she wore.
