FLOTUS Michelle Obama knows the power of grey. No, seriously she does. First, as you might recall, she donned shimmering grey lavender nails (the color in question was Artistic Nail Design Soak Off Colour Gloss in Vogue) at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

This haircare review is terribly overdue, but here it is, finally! I was contacted to review select products from Margaret Mason’s Black Crown Natural Hair Care line, namely the Peppermint and Tea Tree Shampoo, the Hemp Hot Oil Treatment, and the Moisturizing Oil Spray. All of these products are for women and men with locs.
My celebrity inspiration for this review was “Shameless” star Shanola Hampton. If I ever decide to loc my hair (I have flirted with the idea), she would be the first to grace my vision board. She looks simply divine with her lengthy, roping strands. Black Crown even has a Loc Box starter kit that includes all of the products I’ve used plus the Loc Fresh Refresher Spray, Loc Light Moisturizing Creme, and the quintessential satin bonnet.
Since I started writing about my experience with Black Crown, a new product has hit the collection: the Healthy Scalp Elixir. This winter oil has avocado, camellia seed oil, lemongrass and eucalyptus essential oils to help relieve dryness and itchiness while promoting lush, thriving locs.
Surprisingly, Black Crown does not have a conditioner or a deep conditioner (yet) but I am genuinely excited to see what other potential products may be in the works.

It’s Monday, and I am squealing like Kelly Rowland! Starting this week, many of my favorite black Hollywood actresses will dominate the small screen this season. We can thank Kerry Washington, who plays Scandal’s Olivia Pope for, to quote Sleepy Hollow star Nicole Beharie, for ripping “open that hole.” I am rooting for every last one of these talented souls to usher in this exciting wave of feminine, melanin-rich entertainment – it almost reminds me of the ’90s again!
Motions assures that “no matter what type of hair type or texture you may have, [their] products will keep your hair looking as strong and beautiful as you are, enabling you to achieve a unique style that is all your own!” These words also ring true for Nurse Jackson, Annalise Keating, Abbie Mills, and Rainbow Johnson.
Check out four instruction videos featuring celebrity hairstylist and Motions Global Ambassador Ursula Stephen in which she showcases her top 5 favorite looks to help you discover your authentic style. I will also give my commentary on how you can use her tips to channel your favorite TV character.
Marsha Ambrosius’ look on the 2014 BET awards red carpet was a combination of sleek and edgy. As told to Blaq Vixen Beauty by celebrity hairstylist Tiffany Daugherty. Check out her profile at Epiphany Agency.
Her natural hair was shampooed and conditioned using Motions Straight Finish Cleanser and Straight Finish Leave-In Conditioner. This conditioned the hair and created the base for the sleek look. After the Leave-In Conditioner was applied, the hair was blown dry with a medium paddle brush and a Cricket Q-Zone Professional Lightweight Dryer. The hair was then flat ironed with a Sedu flat iron to give a more smooth effect.
She may not be a saint, but Olivia Pope’s hair looks as if Jesus and his disciples descended from above to whip her tresses into waves of glory. Her feathered flip is as cool as her shade of pinkish nude lipstick. Linda Villalobos, hairstylist for Kerry Washington on Scandal, recently joined Twitter. Tweeting from @layersofbeauty, here is what the hair pro shared with us about Olivia’s hair evolution on the show:
