Why I Don't Think ProActiv is Better Than Ever

Editor's note: This post is based on my experience with ProActiv. I am not a dermatologist nor do I claim to be. If you have had wonderful results with ProActiv, more power to you. This is only my opinion.

"We miss you. Come back - ProActiv is better than ever."

If you were a former ProActiv customer, I'm sure you received the seagreen envelope with the card and letter too, right? First of all, I was a little freaked out by the fact that ProActiv had my current address. The last time I bothered to trust another try with Proactiv was when I was living in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. That was back in 2004, I believe. Since then, I've moved. There wasn't even a yellow, redirect sticker on the envelope to let the company know that I had a new address! I mean, have they been keeping tabs on me all this time?

Anyway, here's the message that was inside the card:

Dear Lakish,

We miss you and want you to come back to ProActiv. That's why we've created this exclusive package just for you. Now you can tell us the Proactiv products you want and when you want them. You'll never have too little or too much product at home. Get clear skin on YOUR terms. Guaranteed!

Based on my experience, it takes about 3 months for ProActiv to clear up my acne. Sure, my skin was smoother and more clear but after the 3 month mark, it seemed to stop working. It seems my skin had built immunity against the products. The acne came back.  I stopped using ProActiv. My face reverted back to way it was before I started the Proactiv regimen.

I think the fact that really caused me alarm was that ProActiv still uses benzoyl peroxide in their products. Am I supposed to be joyful that the company has added microcrystals as well?!  This is what Ruth Winters MS, an award-winning science winner and author of A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients, had to say about benzoyl peroxide:

A bleaching and drying ingredient in cosmetics. Toxic by inhalation. A skin allergen and irritant. The EU said in 2003 that its use in nail systems does not pose a risk due to the very low exposure to the consumer. It should be applied by professionals and skin contact should be avoided. Canada does not permit it in cosmetics intended to be applied to the skin but it is permitted in artificial nails kits. On the Canadian Hotlist.

Did I also mention that benzoyl peroxide can make you appear older? It causes extreme dryness, irritation, stinging and peeling of the skin - all of the symptoms that I experienced with ProActiv. Additionally, the FDA discovered this acne-fighting ingredient can also make skin more sensitive to UV rays. This news is extrememly important for those with brown skin as we are more susceptible to bleaching by benzoyl peroxide. ("Face Forward." Allure Magazine, December 2011).

You know something isn't right when a company like Guthy-Renker uses such an ingredient like benzoyl peroxide in their products. Mind you, ProActiv was created by dermatologists who either should know the effect of benzoyl peroxide on the skin or just don't give a damn what type of damage it does just as long as you keep buying their products.

Oh snap! I didn't know this about ProActiv. I never used it but I always thought it would be good.

@BSB: Yeah, the informercials are so misleading. Hate that.

i love bp - ekkk! this is upsetting. i don't use proactiv but clean and clear by johnson and johnson and it's the only thing that tames my breakouts - which include bp.

i was thinking of going back to glycolic acid and addic kojic acid - so they may be a better substitute.

aww man!

@KurlyBella: I was thinking about glycolic and kojic acid too - I never knew that about benzoyl peroxide until I did research on the ingredient. I was using Clean and Clear too but I had to stop using that. It irritates my skin so bad plus my skin is dry and flaky whenever I use it. I was still getting breakouts too!

OMG you are so right. I used to love benzoyl peroxide (up until I read this post lol). It was the only thing that seemed to speed up the healing process. Well, I have noticed that my T-zone, where I concentrate the proactiv "repairing" cream, is not as young-looking. Black don't crack UNLESS YOU USE extremely drying products. =(

I am just glad that you wrote about this because otherwise I wouldn't have come out of my denial. I guess I will just use as many natural products as possible even if they take more time. At least I've been eating better and drinking more tea/water.

BTW I have used the original Proactiv formula and the Gentle formula. The gentle one seems to have no benzoyl peroxide, but it does have oils and other chemicals. I hate how they bill me even when I don't order more kits.

@CreoleSugar: Thank you so much for commenting on my post! I think using Benzoyl Peroxide is a Catch22 because while it does clear up the acne (in most cases), it also ages the skin and makes it unbelievably dry. I'm sure you know that even if you use moisturizer to combat the dryness, the skin never really is moisturized. I hated that.

I also agree about using natural products - as you said, it may take longer but at least you know you're not harming your skin in the long run. I still have to start eating better and drinking more water but I am so hardheaded, I admit it. I think I might have to add that to HabitForge, lol.

I've only used the original ProActiv. I had no idea they had two formulas out? Also, ProActiv knew they were dead wrong for billing you when you hadn't ordered more kits. I would've complained about that.

Ive always thought that ProActiv seemed shady. I'm surprised so many celebrities endorse it, but they also only have very mild acne in the photos they show. Also, of course, I really doubt they actually used the product.
I've only dealt with mild acne during my life except for once, I was put on heavy medical steroids for during a surgery. I broke out like a 13 year old, it was completely embarrassing (I was 25 at the time). So I can understand people with severe acne. I used a medicated cream that basically burned my skin off. I wouldn't be surprised if this stuff was in that too.

i had the same problem with proactiv. i was a customer since 2005 after i entered college. my acne was horrible during my college years, so then i stopped using proactiv in 2007 because it worked at first...then it didn't for the rest of 2006, but i stuck with it. 2007 i was introduced to another product but that got my acne worse. 2008 to 2009 i would occasionally use it with leftover bottles i had. then in 2010 went back to regular proactiv regime only after they claimed it was new and improved. it was working for a the first 3 months, but oh boy it started to irritate my skin and sting so badly i stopped. now i'm using st. ives green tea hope to see if that works...so far my skin is going crazy due to hormones, but i've got to see a dermatologist soon about some acne deep under the skin that just looks like a bump.

@monchaichan: If I may ask, what did your dermatologist recommend for you?
