I meant to post earlier about the Sephora Color Play 5-in-1 set, $30 which was created in collaboration with ShopBop. Today, I ventured onto the ShopBop website and saw the iconic Faces of Fashion editorial lookbook that influenced the runway-inspired sub palettes:
The Boho Bombshell sub palette was inspired by the Jet-Set Bohemian look. This set has dark blues, warm taupes and warm golds.
The Classics Never Die sub palette inspired by the Classic Prep look. This set has smoky brown shades.
The Angelic Boudoir sub palette inspired by The Lady look. This set has nudes, sands, bright blue and fuchsia.
The Black Is The New Black sub palette inspired by the Femme Fatale look. This set has black smoky shades.
The A Nod To Mod sub palette inspired by the London Mod look. This set has bright blues, greens, pink and purples.
By the looks of it, this limited edition palette seems to be geared towards makeup beginners ("newbies") then seasoned beauty addicts. Think of it as a step up from those various makeup palettes seen at Wal-Mart or Target around the holidays. I think the ShopBop stamp was a nice touch though. The shades are unique to this palette and are not available individually, according to a Sephora staff member on the site.
Several customers have reported that out of the ten eyeshadows in each palette, three (at the most) are matte while the rest are a combination of shimmer and sparkle. Fallout was another issue so it would be beneficial to pack on the eyeshadow on your eyelids rather than applying in a wiping motion. An eye primer of some sort will help boost the vibrancy of the eyeshadow since some of the colors are chalky while others are more pigmented.
Now time for some pros. Instead of hauling the entire set around, each of the sub palettes can be popped out and be used on-the-go. The blush and the lip glosses are the redeeming items in this palette. While a set of this nature would retail for $150, you can snag it for $30. Since there is a variety of shades for a variety of occasions, you could easily use this entire palette for a whole year (365 days). If this is the case, your cost per use would be $0.08. The lower your cost per use is, the better the buy.
What do you say? If you want to skip the palette, at least enter the Faces of Fashion Sweepstakes in which one will win a year of supply of makeup from Sephora and a $2500 ShopBop shopping spree. This sweepstakes end February 2, 2011 at 8:59 AM ET. Read the official rules for details and eligibility requirements.
