Scandal 4 x 1: Back to Life (From the Beach), Back to Reality Hair

Olivia Pope S4 Sunglasses

In the opening scene of “Randy, Red, Superfreak and Julia,” Olivia (a.k.a. Julia Baker) has got her life on the coast of Zanzibar.

Situation at the Location: Livin’ La Vida Pacífica

Olivia as Julia

Curly, bouncy natural hair reigned supreme for the political fixer since we last saw her. Her beach was better with a pair of Dior Exquise Sunglasses, her Monique Pean White Diamond & Gold Cage Ring, a white Kosmos by La Perla Mare Non-Wired Swimsuit, a Roberta Freyman Nicola Dress Magik…and Jake. I imagined the former B-613 operative bathing her in countless ounces of Coola Body SPF 30 Unscented Moisturizer. These moments happened, of course, between rounds of sultry beach sex. Olivia’s lip-of-the-day, always, was Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Stick in Warm Caramel. Her wine? ’94 Duvillet, a lavish vino that only exists in Shondaland. Gone Girlindeed.

Hair to the Yes: Heat Free Hair and Motions

Kerry Washington Natural Hair

Let’s get into that hair. The show’s hairstylist Linda Villalobos never identified the brand of hair extensions (sorry ladies, I know you’ve searched) Kerry wears on the show but her natural hair? I volunteer Heat Free Hair as tribute, specifically their For Koils (3B-3C) Collection.  You can manipulate the For Koils Empress Wig with a DENMAN D31 9 Row Volumizing Brush, clarifying shampoo, deep conditioner and leave-in conditioner per the brand’s wig care video:

However, grave news of a beloved gladiator cuts their impromptu getaway short:

And with that, the carefree, curly-haired Julia Baker ceased to exist, and a serious, smooth-stranded Olivia Pope materialized in her wake. People Magazine (who clearly has a problem with ethnic, textured hair – hell, with black women period) tweeted the following (which the publication deleted) asinine comment:

Olivia’s back to straight hair so you KNOW she means business. #Scandal

People Magazine, really? Do you realize that there are a few natural-haired CEOs? In fact, Black Enterprise penned an article where they asked, “Natural Hair and Professionalism. An oxymoron?” and “Is it possible to reach the C-suite without straight hair?” Ask Xerox Chairman and CEO Ursula Burns.

Perhaps the most prominent example of a black women CEO braving politically stormy Corporate America, Burns conducts business with a close-cropped fro with a sliver of corded silver. Are you telling me that this woman would be more powerful with an Olivia Pope-esque press?  To whoever posted that tweet: Girl, bye.

Truthfully, that’s neither here or there but I’ll tell you what matters: how Olivia was able to go from curly to straight in preparation for her D.C. trip. One hair straightening system that comes to mind is the Motions Straight Finish Collection, which is now on sale at Walgreens. I said in my earlier post that this system would be ideal for Olivia. Stay tuned as the brand sent over these products for review consideration!

In the meantime, read my Olivia Pope Hair: Her Style Regimens for Seasons 1-3 post. I’ve decided that I’ll make more of an effort to comment on the hair, beauty and style this season. Which hairstyle do you prefer?

Achieve Select TV-Inspired Hairstyles with Motions

Editor’s note: This is a sponsored post for Motions through The bLink Marketing Network and Lunchbox, all opinions are 100% my own.

It’s Monday, and I am squealing like Kelly Rowland! Starting this week, many of my favorite black Hollywood actresses will dominate the small screen this season. We can thank Kerry Washington, who plays Scandal’s Olivia Pope for, to quote Sleepy Hollow star Nicole Beharie, for ripping “open that hole.” I am rooting for every last one of these talented souls to usher in this exciting wave of feminine, melanin-rich entertainment – it almost reminds me of the ’90s again!

Motions assures that “no matter what type of hair type or texture you may have, [their] products will keep your hair looking as strong and beautiful as you are, enabling you to achieve a unique style that is all your own!” These words also ring true for Nurse Jackson, Annalise Keating, Abbie Mills, and Rainbow Johnson.

Check out four instruction videos featuring celebrity hairstylist and Motions Global Ambassador Ursula Stephen in which she showcases her top 5 favorite looks to help you discover your authentic style. I will also give my commentary on how you can use her tips to channel your favorite TV character.

Get Her Exact Look: Angela Bassett’s 2014 Emmys Makeup

Angela Bassett Emmys Makeup

Late last night, I shot my first email to celebrity makeup artist D’Andre Michael. I followed him months ago after learning he does makeup for Mary J. Blige, Garcelle Beauvais, Queen Latifah and many more of our favorite celebrities.

I saw a behind-the-scenes snap of him touching up Angela Bassett on Instagram (@dandremichael) and was compelled to introduce myself and my blog. Angela B looked absolutely REGAL, and I wanted to capture her beat for the blog. It would’ve been criminal of me not to ask the master behind the mug.

After I practically begged Mr. Michael for details behind her Emmys makeup look, he sent over an arresting, high-resolution photo, which you can see above. Doesn’t she look like Egyptian royalty? She should have been casted as Queen Tuya in the upcoming Exodus: Gods and Kings but I digress) and a complete list of all the products he used, from Ben Nye to his lip gloss line titled U.G.L.Y. Girl Cosmetics. Blaq Vixen Beauty FTW!

U.G.L.Y. stands for Undeniably Gorgeous, Lovely, and Young. Each gloss is formulated with antioxidants and an exotic peach flavor. The line boasts ten shades. You can check out the complete line at  www.uglygirlcosmetics.com.

Of the line, Michael explained to Sophisticate’s Black Hair Magazine, “I love the texture, feel, look and ingredients. There are ten colors, and the formula is not sticky and there are anti-aging properties in it. You can wear them alone, or line your lips and rub them together to blend your liner. You can also put them on top of a lipstick for added shine.”

skin.  Since Kerry’s skin has been exalted as “naturally flawless” already in a previous beauty breakdown I have in draft, I’ll continue with the accolades.

I’m sure Gonzalez followed a similar regimen in preparing Kerry for this year’s Emmys: Prep the skin with Neutrogena Visibly Even Moisturizer to even out her skin tone, apply foundation where needed (Kerry usually wears Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation in #9 but Gonzalez used Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer in SX11) and add a touch of  warmth with Neutrogena Healthy Skin Blends Natural Radiance Bronzer in Sunkissed. Based on the behind-the-scenes snap shared on Twitter, Kerry is also wearing Neutrogena Healthy Skin Custom Glow Bronzer and Blush Duo in Raisin Glow, a “universal shade,” says Gonzalez.

eyes. There are some conflicting reports about the shade of Kerry’s smokey eye makeup. Some media outlets reported she wore stormy blue shadow while others identified the sultry shade as slate. I searched around and found Us Magazine’s commentary on her “dramatic eye:”

Uzo Aduba Creative Emmys Awards Makeup

Uzo Aduba, of “Orange Is the New Black” fame, was one of Saturday’s biggest winners at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. She nabbed “Guest Actress in a Comedy Series” for the uber-popular Netflix series (I kid you not, this whole “guest actress” business is throwing me for a loop though). For her big day, she enlisted the help of dynamic duo celebrity hairstylist Jamika Wilson and celebrity makeup artist Jessica Smalls. And doing what I do best, here is how you can get her exact makeup look! Hair details (no doubt by Motions Hair Care) coming soon!

Her Vanity: Angela Bassett Talks Beauty with Violet Grey

Angela Bassett with Perfume at Vanity

Recently, the incomparable Angela Bassett sat down with “the industry’s beauty edit” Violet Grey to slay in lingerie (which was surprisingly not credited in the feature) while revealing her beauty secrets and the art of working the red carpet.

Angela Bassett as Marie Laveau in American Horror Story Coven

Last year, she completely revitalized my Wednesday nights through her portrayal of Marie Laveau on American Horror Story: Coven. I did not tune in for anyone else as she ethered my soul every time she was on-screen. Coupled with her endless Senegalese twists and commanding style, I was not worthy. I can’t wait for the FX anthology series to return this October for her to steal the show again in American Horror Story: Freakshow. She returns as Desiree Dupree, a three-breasted black woman in an interracial union in 1950’s Jupiter, Florida. See a shot of her below from the official trailer:Angela Bassett AHS Freakshow

Dammit, isn’t she flawless? Here are some brief beauty bits Bassett divulged to Violet Grey:
