This haircare review is terribly overdue, but here it is, finally! I was contacted to review select products from Margaret Mason’s Black Crown Natural Hair Care line, namely the Peppermint and Tea Tree Shampoo, the Hemp Hot Oil Treatment, and the Moisturizing Oil Spray. All of these products are for women and men with locs.
- Shanola Hampton
My celebrity inspiration for this review was “Shameless” star Shanola Hampton. If I ever decide to loc my hair (I have flirted with the idea), she would be the first to grace my vision board. She looks simply divine with her lengthy, roping strands. Black Crown even has a Loc Box starter kit that includes all of the products I’ve used plus the Loc Fresh Refresher Spray, Loc Light Moisturizing Creme, and the quintessential satin bonnet.
Since I started writing about my experience with Black Crown, a new product has hit the collection: the Healthy Scalp Elixir. This winter oil has avocado, camellia seed oil, lemongrass and eucalyptus essential oils to help relieve dryness and itchiness while promoting lush, thriving locs.
Surprisingly, Black Crown does not have a conditioner or a deep conditioner (yet) but I am genuinely excited to see what other potential products may be in the works.

Is Fox’s new hit show “Gotham” a must-see for you on Monday nights at 8/7c? If not, here’s a reason to watch: Jada Pinkett-Smith. As Gotham’s feisty and fashion-forward crime lord Fish Mooney, Pinkett-Smith is utterly delicious. She satisfies my desires for all things dark and dangerous. And of course, as I am in love with her wardrobe! According to costume designer Lisa Padovani, Jada’s leather and metallic dress as “80’s Versace/Mugler inspired.”
Three parts Stephanie “Queenie” St. Clair, Griselda Blanco and Norma Desmond, I love that Jada on this show. I love that she surrendered to her shadow in this delicious role. While I’ve been hooked since the pilot premiered on September 22, it was only after episode 3 (“The Balloonman”) aired that I knew I had to finally dedicate a post to the gorgeous gangster. Here is what she wore and how to get her inspired style by episode:

In the opening scene of “Randy, Red, Superfreak and Julia,” Olivia (a.k.a. Julia Baker) has got her life on the coast of Zanzibar.
Situation at the Location: Livin’ La Vida Pacífica
Curly, bouncy natural hair reigned supreme for the political fixer since we last saw her. Her beach was better with a pair of Dior Exquise Sunglasses, her Monique Pean White Diamond & Gold Cage Ring, a white Kosmos by La Perla Mare Non-Wired Swimsuit, a Roberta Freyman Nicola Dress Magik…and Jake. I imagined the former B-613 operative bathing her in countless ounces of Coola Body SPF 30 Unscented Moisturizer. These moments happened, of course, between rounds of sultry beach sex. Olivia’s lip-of-the-day, always, was Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Stick in Warm Caramel. Her wine? ’94 Duvillet, a lavish vino that only exists in Shondaland. Gone Girl, indeed.

Editor’s note: This is a sponsored post for Motions through The bLink Marketing Network and Lunchbox, all opinions are 100% my own.
It’s Monday, and I am squealing like Kelly Rowland! Starting this week, many of my favorite black Hollywood actresses will dominate the small screen this season. We can thank Kerry Washington, who plays Scandal’s Olivia Pope for, to quote Sleepy Hollow star Nicole Beharie, for ripping “open that hole.” I am rooting for every last one of these talented souls to usher in this exciting wave of feminine, melanin-rich entertainment – it almost reminds me of the ’90s again!
Motions assures that “no matter what type of hair type or texture you may have, [their] products will keep your hair looking as strong and beautiful as you are, enabling you to achieve a unique style that is all your own!” These words also ring true for Nurse Jackson, Annalise Keating, Abbie Mills, and Rainbow Johnson.
Check out four instruction videos featuring celebrity hairstylist and Motions Global Ambassador Ursula Stephen in which she showcases her top 5 favorite looks to help you discover your authentic style. I will also give my commentary on how you can use her tips to channel your favorite TV character.

Late last night, I shot my first email to celebrity makeup artist D’Andre Michael. I followed him months ago after learning he does makeup for Mary J. Blige, Garcelle Beauvais, Queen Latifah and many more of our favorite celebrities.
I saw a behind-the-scenes snap of him touching up Angela Bassett on Instagram (@dandremichael) and was compelled to introduce myself and my blog. Angela B looked absolutely REGAL, and I wanted to capture her beat for the blog. It would’ve been criminal of me not to ask the master behind the mug.
After I practically begged Mr. Michael for details behind her Emmys makeup look, he sent over an arresting, high-resolution photo, which you can see above. Doesn’t she look like Egyptian royalty? She should have been casted as Queen Tuya in the upcoming Exodus: Gods and Kings but I digress) and a complete list of all the products he used, from Ben Nye to his lip gloss line titled U.G.L.Y. Girl Cosmetics. Blaq Vixen Beauty FTW!
U.G.L.Y. stands for Undeniably Gorgeous, Lovely, and Young. Each gloss is formulated with antioxidants and an exotic peach flavor. The line boasts ten shades. You can check out the complete line at www.uglygirlcosmetics.com.
Of the line, Michael explained to Sophisticate’s Black Hair Magazine, “I love the texture, feel, look and ingredients. There are ten colors, and the formula is not sticky and there are anti-aging properties in it. You can wear them alone, or line your lips and rub them together to blend your liner. You can also put them on top of a lipstick for added shine.”
